UNIT I – THE PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT PROGRESSIVE

Activity 1
a. The boy next door is watering the plants now, but he normally does it in the evening.


b. My sister is playing badminton now, but she does not play here every day.


c. My brother is searching for his pen. He often misplaces it.


d. We are getting ready to go to school; we go to school every morning.


e. I usually enjoy reading books, but I am not enjoying this one very much.


f. My grandfather rarely carries an umbrella, but he is carrying one now because there are dark clouds in the sky.


g. I am sorry, but you can’t see the Minister. He is sleeping still, although he usually wakes up very early.


h. Hari is doing his homework still. His brother, who always works very fast, is playing in the garden.

Activity 2


1. Father is having a shave, but he usually goes for a walk at this time.


2. Mother is watching TV, but she usually cooks dinner at this time.


3. My uncle is reading the newspaper, but he usually plays cards at this time.


4. My aunt is listening to music, but she usually talks with

 neighbours at this time.


5. My sister is drawing pictures, but she usually studies at this time.


6. My brother is washing clothes, but he usually plays games at this time.


7. I am writing an essay, but I usually watch cartoons at this time.

Activity 3


a. Our neighbours go to Puri every winter but this winter they are going to Sambalpur.


b. My father generally takes the bus but today he is walking to work.


c. They usually play football on Sundays but this Sunday they are

 playing cricket instead.


d. My brother always works on the day shift but this summer he is

 working on the night shift.


e. My teacher goes abroad every year but she is visiting Kanya

 Kumari this year.

Activity 4


i. I normally get up at 7 o’clock but I am getting up at 5 a.m. these days.


ii. I usually watch TV in the evening but I am revising my lessons

 these days.


iii. I normally play cricket in the evening but I am studying at that

 time now.


iv. I usually sleep at 10 p.m. but I am sleeping at midnight now.


v. I normally read newspapers in the morning but I am reading notes

 these days.


vi. I usually spend Sundays with friends but I am preparing for

 exams this month.


vii. I usually help my mother in the kitchen but I am spending more

 time studying now.

Activity 5


i. Our village has no water supply but now the government is

 providing piped water to every home.


ii. Our village had no electricity earlier but now electric poles are

 being installed everywhere.


iii. The roads were very rough but now new concrete roads are being

 built.


iv. There was no hospital before but now a health centre is being

 constructed.


v. Children had no proper school earlier but now a new school

 building is being built with better facilities.

Activity 6


a. i. Gold is costing more and more these days.


   ii. Gold costs a great deal of money.


b. i. He is thinking. Don’t disturb him.


   ii. He thinks very highly of you.


c. i. I enjoy games.


   ii. I am enjoying this game very much.


Activity 7


a. The tank contains four gallons of petrol.

c. The story describes the life of the Rajput family.


d. The doctor is having a look at the X-Ray.


e. This village reminds me of my childhood.

Activity 8


This year I am studying English at Delhi University. I am working

 part time in a public library. I’m lucky to have this job. I don’t have

 to get up early. The library opens at 10 and closes at 7. The work is

 interesting because people are always coming in and asking me to

 help them, so I am learning a lot about different subjects. I enjoy the

 job and find it very amusing too. People use the strangest things as

 bookmarks. I have found a lock of black hair inside books.

 Matchsticks are common and so are bus tickets. My colleagues are

 always finding things – even a ten rupee note, but I haven’t been so

 lucky! I often think of a photograph I once found inside a book. It

 was the photograph of a beautiful girl, and on the back were the words: “I love you, and I miss you very much.”

UNIT II – THE PRESENT PERFECT

Activity 9


a. I haven’t told her yet.


b. No, thanks. I have just eaten my lunch.


c. Yes, he has just arrived.


d. I don’t know, I haven’t seen the programme yet.


e. Yes, he has just moved to Satyanagar.

Activity 11

Activity 12


1. Anil has been to Kolkata, but Mohan hasn’t.

7. Anima and Mohan have both been to Puri, but neither has been to Koraput.
