Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy Unit 3

UNIT 3  The King once again asked the hermit for answers to his three questions. The hermit explained that the King had already received them through his own actions. By helping the hermit dig, the King avoided danger; at that time, the hermit was the most important man, and helping him was the King’s most important duty. Later, by saving the wounded enemy, the King made peace with him; then the wounded man was the most important person, and caring for him was the most important task. The hermit concluded that the most important time is “now”, the most important person is the one you are with, and the most important work is to do good for others, for that is the true purpose of life.

A Psalm of Life (Analysis)

Stanza 1 Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream! — For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. He believes such negative thinking comes from a “sleeping soul” — someone not truly alive or aware. He insists that reality is deeper and more serious than it appears. Tone: Strong, rejecting negativity. Message: Life has purpose; don’t waste it with hopeless or passive thinking. --- Stanza 2 Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest, Was not spoken of the soul. Analysis: Life is real and serious, not a joke or illusion. The goal of life is not death. The line “Dust thou art...” refers to the body, but the soul is immortal. Tone: Philosophical, hopeful. Message: Life matters; death is not the end of the soul. --- Stanza 3 Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; Bu...
