THE MONKEY'S PAW SCENE 2

 

The next afternoon.

ପରବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଅପରାହ୍ନ।

The sun shines into the living room. MR. and MRS. WHITE are drinking tea and sorting through the day's mail. The paw lies on a shelf, ignored.

ସୂର୍ଯ୍ୟରୋଶଣୀ ଲିଭିଂ ରୁମ୍‌ରେ ପଡୁଛି। ମିଷ୍ଟର୍ ଏବଂ ମିସେସ୍ WHITES ଚା ପିଇଥିବାବେଳେ ଦିନର ଚିଠିଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ସଜାଡୁଛନ୍ତି। ପଞ୍ଝାଟି ଆଲ୍ମିରା

ଭିତରେ ପଡ଼ିରହିଛି, ଅବହେଳିତ ।

Mrs. White. Plenty of bills so far, but no check for two hundred pounds. I suppose Herbert will have more of his funny remarks for you when he gets home from the factory.

Mrs White: ଏପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଖୁବ୍ ବିଲ୍ ଆସିଛି, କିନ୍ତୁ ଦୁଇଶ ପାଉଣ୍ଡର ଚେକ୍ ନାହିଁ। ମୁଁ ଭାବୁଛି, ହର୍ବର୍ଟ୍ କାରଖାନାରୁ ଫେରିଲେ ଆପଣଙ୍କୁ ଆଉ କିଛି ମଜାଦାର କଥା କହିବ।

Mr. White. I'm sure he will. But the thing moved in my hand-I'd swear to that.

Mr. White: ନିଶ୍ଚୟ ସେ କହିବ। କିନ୍ତୁ ସେଇ ଜିନିଷଟି ମୋ ହାତରେ ଆପେ ଆପେ ଗତିକରୁଥିଲା-‌‌‌‌-- ମୁଁ ସେଥିପାଇଁ ସପଥ କରିପାରିବି।

 

Mrs. White (soothingly). You thought it did.

             (ଶାନ୍ତ କରି):  ଏହା ତୁମ ମନର ଭାବନା ଥିଲା ।

Mr. White. It did! There was no thought about it. I had just-What is it?

 ନାହିଁ, ସେହିଟା ସତ! ଏଥିରେ କୌଣସି ଭ୍ରମ ନଥିଲା। ମୁଁ ମାତ୍ର…—କ'ଣ?

[MRS. WHITE is looking past him, out the window.]

[MRS. WHITE ତାଙ୍କୁ ଛାଡ଼ି,  ଝରକାବାଟେ ବାହାରକୁ  ଦେଖୁଛନ୍ତି।]

Mrs. White. There's somebody outside. A man in a business suit. I've never seen him before. . . . He's acting very strange-as if he can't decide whether to open the gate or not. Here he comes up the path now.**

MRS. WHITE: ବାହାରେ କିଏ ଜଣେ ଅଛନ୍ତି। ଏକ ବ୍ୟବସାୟୀ ପୋଶାକ ପିନ୍ଧିଥିବା ପୁରୁଷ। ମୁଁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ପୂର୍ବରୁ କେବେ ଦେଖିନି… ସେ ବହୁତ ଅଜବ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରୁଛନ୍ତି— ଯେପରି ସେ ଗେଟ୍‌ ଖୋଲିବେ କି ନାହିଁ, ନିଷ୍ପତ୍ତି ନେଇପାରୁନି। ଦେଖନ୍ତୁ, ସେ ଏବେ ଆମପଥରେ ଆସୁଛନ୍ତି।

[There is a knock at the door and MRS. WHITE goes to let the STRANGER in. Inside, the STRANGER stands silently for a moment, looking uncomfortable.]**

[ଦ୍ୱାରରେ ଟକ୍ ଟକ୍ ହେଲା, MRS. WHITE  ଯାଇ STRANGER କୁ ଭିତରକୁ ଆଣିଲେ। STRANGER କିଛି ସମୟ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ନୀରବଭାବେ ଛିଡାହେଲେ, ଅସୁବିଧାଜନକ ଲାଗିଥିଲା।]

 

Stranger. I-I was asked to come see you. I come from Maw and Meggins.

ମୁ-ମୋତେ ଆପଣଙ୍କୁ ଦେଖାକରିବା ନିମଂତେ ପଠାଯାଇଛି। ମୁଁ "ମାଓ ଏବଂ ମେଗିନ୍ସ"ରୁ ଆସିଛି।

Mrs. White (alarmed). Is anything wrong? Has something happened to Herbert? What is it? What is it?*

Mrs. White (ଭୟଭୀତ): କିଛି ଘଟିଲା କି? ହର୍ବର୍ଟ୍ ସହ କିଛି ହୋଇଛି କି? କଣ ହେଲା? କଣ?

Mr. White. Now, now. Calm down. No point jumping to conclusions. (Looking hopefully at the STRANGER) I'm sure our visitor hasn't brought us any bad news.**

Mr. White: ଏବେ, ଏବେ। ଶାନ୍ତ ହୁଅ। ତୁରନ୍ତ ନିଷ୍କର୍ଷରେ ପହଞ୍ଚିବାର ଅର୍ଥ ନାହିଁ। (ଆଶାଭରସାହିତ STRANGER ଦିଗକୁ ଦେଖି) ମୁଁ ନିଶ୍ଚିତ ଯେ, ଆମର ଅତିଥି ଖରାପ ଖବର ନେଇ ଆସିନାହାନ୍ତି।**

Stranger. I'm sorry . . . ମୁଁ ଦୁଃଖିତ…

: Mrs. White (frantic). Is he hurt?

                         (ବିହ୍ୱଳ): ସେ ଆହତ କି?

 

Stranger (nods). Badly hurt. But he is not in any pain.**

**ଅଜଣା (ମୁଣ୍ଡନୁଆଇ): ଭୟଙ୍କର ଆହତ। କିନ୍ତୁ ସେ କୌଣସି ବେଦନାରେ ନାହାନ୍ତି।

Mrs. White. Oh, thank goodness! Thank goodness for that! Thank-

 ଆହ୍, ଭଗବାନଙ୍କୁ ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ! ସେଥିପାଇଁ ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ! ଧନ୍—

[She breaks off, suddenly understanding, and stares at the STRANGER in growing horror. The STRANGER looks at the floor. MRS. WHITE turns to her husband and takes his hand. There is a long pause.]

[ସେ ଅଚାନକ ବୁଝି, କଥା ବନ୍ଦ କରିଦେଇ STRANGER ଦିଗକୁ ଭୟରେ ଚାହିଲେ। STRANGER ଭୂମିକୁ ଦେଖିଲେ। ମିସେସ୍ ୱାଇଟ୍ ତାଙ୍କ ସ୍ୱାମୀଙ୍କ ହାତ ଧରିଲେ। ଦୀର୍ଘ ବିରାମ।]

 

Stranger (in a low voice). He was caught in the machinery.

 (ନୀଚ ସ୍ୱରରେ): ସେ ଯନ୍ତ୍ରରେ ଚାପି ହେଲେ।

Mr. White (dazed). Caught in the machinery. Yes. (He squeezes his wife's hand and stares blankly out the window, then turns to the STRANGER.)

ମିଷ୍ଟର୍ ୱାଇଟ୍‌ (ବିହ୍ଳ): ଯନ୍ତ୍ରରେ ଧରା ପଡ଼ିଥିଲେ। ହଁ। (ସେ ପତ୍ନୀଙ୍କର ହାତକୁ ଚାପି, ଖାଲି ଦୃଷ୍ଟିରେ ଝରକାରେ ବାହାରକୁ ଦେଖିଲେ, ପରେ STRANGER କୁ ଦେଖିଲେ।)

Mr. White. He was our only child, you know. It is hard.

ସେ ଆମର ଏକମାତ୍ର ସନ୍ତାନ ଥିଲେ, ଆପଣ ଜାଣନ୍ତି। ଏହା କଷ୍ଟଦାୟକ।

Stranger (clearing his throat). The company wants me to convey their sincere sympathy with you in your great loss. I hope you understand that I'm just doing my job. (Pauses) I'm supposed to tell you that Maw and Meggins disclaim all responsibility. They admit no liability, but in consideration of your son's work, they would like to give you a certain sum as compensation.**

 Stranger (କଣ୍ଠ ସଫା କରି): କମ୍ପାନୀ ଆପଣଙ୍କୁ ତାଙ୍କ ସତ୍‌ସହାନୁଭୂତି ପହଞ୍ଚେଇବାକୁ ମୋତେ ପଠାଇଛନ୍ତି, ଆପଣଙ୍କ ଏହି ବିଶାଳ କ୍ଷତିରେ। ଆଶା କରେ ଆପଣ ବୁଝିବେ ଯେ ମୁଁ କେବଳ ମୋର କାମ କରୁଛି। (ବିରାମ) ମୋତେ କହିବାକୁ କୁହାଯାଇଛି ଯେ, "ମାଓ ଏବଂ ମେଗିନ୍ସ" ସମସ୍ତ ଦାୟିତ୍ୱ ନେବେ। ସେମାନେ କୌଣସି ଆଇନଗତ ଦାୟିତ୍ୱ ସ୍ୱୀକାର କରୁନାହାନ୍ତି, କିନ୍ତୁ ଆପଣଙ୍କ ପୁଅଙ୍କ କାମକୁ ଭାବି, ସେମାନେ ଆପଣଙ୍କୁ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ରାଶି କ୍ଷତିପୁରଣ ଭାବେ ଦେବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଛନ୍ତି।

Mr. White (barely able to speak). A certain sum . . . How much?

ମିଷ୍ଟର୍ ୱାଇଟ୍‌ (କେବଳ କହିପାରୁଥିବା): ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ରାଶି… କେତେ?

Stranger. Two hundred pounds. ଦୁଇଶହ ପାଉଣ୍ଡ।

 [MRS. WHITE screams. MR. WHITE holds out his hands and falls to the floor in a faint.]

[MRS. WHITE ଚିତ୍କାର କରିଥିଲେ। ମିଷ୍ଟର୍ ୱାଇଟ୍ ହାତ ପ୍ରସାରିତ କରି, ଜ୍ଞାନହୀନ ହୋଇ ଭୂମିକୁ ପଡ଼ିଗଲେ।]
