PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE (STRUCTURE + USE )

 

 PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

 

ଯେତେବେଳେ କାହାର କାମ ଅତୀତରେ ଚାଲୁଥିଲା (Continue in past time), ସେଥିରେ Past Continuous ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।

ଉଦାହରଣ:

(1) ସେ ବଜାରକୁ ଯାଉଥିଲା।

He was going to market.

(2) ରମେଶ ଚିଠି ଲେଖୁଥିଲା।

Ramesh was writing a letter.

(3) ସେ ଗୀତ ଗାଉଥିଲା।

She was singing a song.

(4) ସେ ସୋଇଥିଲା।

She was sleeping.

(5) ସେମାନେ ଫୁଟବଲ୍ ଖେଳୁଥିଲେ।

They were playing football.

(6) ରହିମ୍ ପଢ଼ୁଥିଲା।

Rahim was studying.

(7) ବର୍ଷା ହେଉଥିଲା।

It was raining.

(8) ମୁଁ ଖେଳୁଥିଲି।

I was playing.

(9) ତୁମେ କପଡ଼ ଧୁଅଉଥିଲା।

You were washing clothes.

(10) ଆମେ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟାଳୟକୁ ଯାଉଥିଲୁ।

We were going to office.

 

STRUCTURE:

Subject + was/were + V-ing + Object

 

Verb + ing (Present Participle form)

Was → Singular Subject ପାଇଁ

Were→ Plural Subject ଓ You ପାଇଁ

 

• Ø Negative ଓ Interrogative Sentences

Negative:

Subject + was/were + not + V-ing + Object

Interrogative:

Was/Were + Subject + V-ing + Object ?

 

**Examples:**

 

1. He was playing. → He was not playing. → Was he playing?

2. They were smoking. → They were not smoking. → Were they smoking?

3. I was reading. → I was not reading. → Was I reading?

4. Sita was cooking. → Sita was not cooking. → Was Sita cooking?

5. We were dancing. → We were not dancing. → Were we dancing?

 

• Ø Interrogative-Negative Sentences

 

Structure:

Was/Were + Subject + not + V-ing + Object ?

Or

 Wasn’t/Weren’t + Subject + V-ing + Object ?

 

**Examples:**

 

1. He was going to market. → Was he not going to market? / Wasn’t he going to market?

2. They were playing cards. → Were they not playing cards? / Weren’t they playing cards?

 

USE OF PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE IN VARIOUS SITUATIONS:

 

(1)କାହାର କାମ ଅତୀତରେ ଚାଲୁଥିଲେ।

Examples:

(a) He was playing cricket.

(b) They were watching T.V.

(c) She was swimming in the river.

(d) Rahim was repairing the car.

 

(2) କାହାର ଅଭ୍ୟାସ (habit) Past ରେ ସବୁବେଳେ/ବାରମ୍ବାର (frequently) ଘଟୁଥିଲା। Adverbs → always, continually, constantly.

Examples:

(a) He was always abusing others.

(b) She was constantly crying those days.

(c) They were continually threatening us.

(d) She was always grumbling.

 

(3) Past Continuous କେବେକେବେ Past Indefinite ସହିତ ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ → ଯେତେବେଳେ ଏକ କାମ ଚାଲୁଥିଲା, ସେତେବେଳେ ଆଉ ଗୋଟିଏ କାମ ହେଲା।

Examples:

(a) When he arrived, his wife was washing her clothes.

(b) The boy was knocked down by a car, while he was crossing the road.

(c) Where were you living, when the war broke out?

(d) The sun was just setting as they reached the hill.

 

(4) ଦୁଇଟି କାମ ସମୟକାଳରେ (simultaneously) ଚାଲୁଥିଲା।

Examples:

(a) While she was cooking, I was washing the clothes.

(b) While I was singing, Ramesh was reading.

(c) While they were playing, I was watching T.V.

(d) While he was reading, Sita was playing.
