NOTE MAKING AND SUMMERIZING

Step 1: Read the passage carefully

Go through the passage once fully  to understand the main idea.

On the second reading, underline or highlight key words/phrases.

Step 2: Decide a Title

 

Look for the central idea of the passage.

Keep the title short, clear, and meaningful

 Example: If the passage is about pollution, title could be “Causes & Effects of Pollution”.

Step 3: Identify Main Points

 

 Break the passage into 3–4 main points

Each main point should cover one big idea

 

   Example: Causes / Effects / Solutions.

Step 4: Add Sub-points

 

Under each main point, add 2–3 sub-points with details.

 Keep them short phrases, not full sentences.

 Example

Passage (shortened):

“Exercise is necessary for good health. It makes the body strong and active. It also improves mental health by reducing stress. Lack of exercise causes obesity and heart disease. Simple activities like walking, jogging, and cycling are very effective. Everyone should make exercise a daily habit.”

“Trees are very useful to human beings. They give us fruits, wood, and shade. They help in bringing rain and also reduce air pollution. Trees are home to many birds and animals. Cutting down trees leads to soil erosion and imbalance in nature. Therefore, we should plant more trees and protect forests.”

“Discipline is the backbone of any nation. It means following rules and being self-controlled. A disciplined person is respected everywhere because discipline brings order and efficiency. In schools, discipline helps students to learn better. At home, it creates peace and happiness. In society, discipline reduces conflicts and promotes harmony. Lack of discipline leads to chaos, failure, and unhappiness. Therefore, discipline should be practiced in every stage of life. It should not be forced but developed as a habit. Parents and teachers play an important role in teaching discipline. A disciplined nation is strong and successful.”

It also provides farmers with useful information about crops, weather, and modern farming techniques. However, television has its disadvantages too. Too much watching leads to wastage of time, poor eyesight, and lack of physical activity. Many children neglect their studies because of excessive TV viewing. Sometimes, violent or vulgar programs spoil the minds of young people. Therefore, it is necessary to watch television with discipline and select only useful programs. If used wisely, television can be a source of knowledge, inspiration, and national development.”
