Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted. They normally have singular and plural forms.
π one pen → three pens
π a girl → many girls

Uncountable nouns refer to things that we do not normally count individually.

Although uncountable nouns cannot normally be counted directly, we can use a unit or container to count them.

Some nouns can be both countable and uncountable. Their meanings may change according to their use.
• I wrote a paper on the effects of the cyclone. → Countable
• Books are printed on paper. → Uncountable
• I bought an iron. → Countable
• Iron is stronger than wood. → Uncountable

Then:
I saw a dog. The dog was friendly.
A → before a consonant sound: a book
AN → before a vowel sound: an apple

2. There are two bags on the table; a white one and a yellow one. The white one belongs to my friend.
3. My friend witnessed an accident this morning. A truck crashed into a lamp post. The driver wasn't hurt.
4. A taxi drove up to our house. The taxi stopped outside and a woman got out.
We use the when we refer to something unique—the only one of its kind.

Some nouns can be used without the when we mean the institution and its normal purpose.

But when we mean the particular building or place, we use the.
