Report Writing (part-1)

What is a Report?

A report is a factual and objective account of an event, incident, meeting, survey, accident, or any important occurrence. It presents information in a clear, brief, and organized manner for newspapers, magazines, schools, or offices.


Objectives of Report Writing


- To inform readers about an event or incident.

- To present facts accurately.

- To create awareness about important issues.

- To maintain a permanent record of an event.


Format of a Newspaper Report


1. Headline


- A short, catchy title.

- It should attract the reader's attention.


2. Byline


- Name of the reporter.

- Example: By Naresh Kumar Sahu or By Our Staff Correspondent


3. Place and Date


- Mention the place and date before the report.


4. Body of the Report

The body should answer the following questions:


- What happened?

- When did it happen?

- Where did it happen?

- Who was involved?

- Why did it happen?

- How did it happen?

- What was the result?

- What actions were taken?


Important Features


- Use simple and formal language.

- Write in the third person.

- Use the past tense.

- Be factual and unbiased.

- Avoid personal opinions.

- Write in short paragraphs.

- Keep within the prescribed word limit (usually 100–120 words).


Useful Expressions


- According to eyewitnesses...

- The incident occurred...

- The programme was inaugurated by...

- Local residents expressed concern...

- Immediate action was taken...

- The authorities assured...

- Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

- An investigation is underway.

Poor Road Conditions Lead to Frequent Accidents

Bhadrak, August 1, 2026: Poor road conditions in the area have become a major cause of frequent accidents. Deep potholes, broken roads, and inadequate street lighting have made travelling unsafe. Several motorists and pedestrians have suffered injuries in recent weeks. Local residents have repeatedly requested the authorities to repair the roads, but little progress has been made. Traffic police have advised commuters to drive carefully, especially during the rainy season. Citizens are demanding immediate repair work and better road safety measures to prevent further accidents and protect public lives.
