Imperative Sentence in Indirect Speech

Imperative Sentence in Indirect Speech means reporting a command, request, advice, or order given by someone.


1. Basic Rule

When changing direct speech → indirect speech for an imperative sentence:

Structure

Direct:
Subject + said to + object, "Imperative sentence."

Indirect:
Subject + told / asked / advised / requested + object + to + verb

2. Types with Examples

1. Command / Order

Use told / ordered / commanded

Direct: He said to me, “Open the door.”
Indirect: He told me to open the door.

Direct: The teacher said to the students, “Stand up.”
Indirect: The teacher told the students to stand up.

2. Request

Use requested / begged / asked

Direct: She said to me, “Please help me.”
Indirect: She requested me to help her.

Direct: He said, “Please give me some water.”
Indirect: He requested to give him some water.

3. Advice / Suggestion

Use advised / suggested

Direct: The doctor said to him, “Take rest.”
Indirect: The doctor advised him to take rest.

4. Negative Imperative

Use not to + verb

Direct: He said to me, “Do not run.”
Indirect: He told me not to run.

Direct: The teacher said, “Do not make noise.”
Indirect: The teacher told us not to make noise.

Example:
“Close the window.” → to close the window
“Do not play here.” → not to play there

1–10 (Command / Order)

1. He said to me, “Open the door.”
Answer: He told me to open the door.


2. The teacher said to the students, “Sit down.”
Answer: The teacher told the students to sit down.


3. Father said to me, “Finish your homework.”
Answer: Father told me to finish my homework.


4. The officer said to the soldier, “Follow me.”
Answer: The officer ordered the soldier to follow him.


5. She said to him, “Bring a glass of water.”
Answer: She told him to bring a glass of water.


6. The master said to the servant, “Clean the room.”
Answer: The master told the servant to clean the room.


7. He said to the boy, “Close the window.”
Answer: He told the boy to close the window.


8. The captain said to the players, “Work hard.”
Answer: The captain told the players to work hard.


9. The teacher said to the monitor, “Write the answer on the board.”
Answer: The teacher told the monitor to write the answer on the board.


10. Mother said to me, “Buy some vegetables.”
Answer: Mother told me to buy some vegetables.

11. He said to me, “Please help me.”
Answer: He requested me to help him.


12. She said to him, “Please lend me your book.”
Answer: She requested him to lend her his book.


13. The old man said to the boy, “Please give me some water.”
Answer: The old man requested the boy to give him some water.


14. He said to the teacher, “Please explain the lesson again.”
Answer: He requested the teacher to explain the lesson again.


15. She said to me, “Please wait for me.”
Answer: She requested me to wait for her.


16. The child said to his mother, “Please buy me a toy.”
Answer: The child requested his mother to buy him a toy.


17. He said to his friend, “Please come to my house.”
Answer: He requested his friend to come to his house.


18. She said to the driver, “Please stop the car.”
Answer: She requested the driver to stop the car.


19. The patient said to the doctor, “Please save me.”
Answer: The patient requested the doctor to save him.


20. He said to me, “Please show me the way.”
Answer: He requested me to show him the way.

21–30 (Negative Imperative)

21. He said to me, “Do not run.”
Answer: He told me not to run.


22. The teacher said to the students, “Do not make noise.”
Answer: The teacher told the students not to make noise.


23. Mother said to me, “Do not waste food.”
Answer: Mother told me not to waste food.


24. Father said to me, “Do not tell a lie.”
Answer: Father advised me not to tell a lie.


25. The doctor said to him, “Do not smoke.”
Answer: The doctor advised him not to smoke.


26. She said to the child, “Do not touch the fire.”
Answer: She told the child not to touch the fire.


27. The teacher said to the boys, “Do not play in the classroom.”
Answer: The teacher told the boys not to play in the classroom.


28. He said to me, “Do not forget my book.”
Answer: He told me not to forget his book.


29. Mother said to the children, “Do not go outside.”
Answer: Mother told the children not to go outside.


30. The officer said to the guard, “Do not allow anyone inside.”
Answer: The officer ordered the guard not to allow anyone inside.
