The Golden Touch

by by Nathaniel Hawthorne

(Summery)

Unit- I

1. Long ago, there lived a very rich king named Midas.

2. King Midas loved gold more than anything in the world.

3. He was proud of his golden crown and his great wealth.

4. He had a little daughter named Marygold, whom he loved dearly.

5. But even his love for her made him desire more gold.

6. He wished that everything he touched could turn into gold.

7. He no longer enjoyed the beauty of flowers or music, only gold.

8. He often went to a secret room to admire and count his treasures.

9. One morning, while in his treasure-room, he saw a bright light.

10. In that light stood a stranger who smiled kindly at him.

11. The stranger asked if Midas was not yet satisfied with his riches.

12. Midas replied that he wished everything he touched could become gold.

13. The stranger warned him to think carefully before making such a wish.

14. Midas insisted it would make him perfectly happy.

15. The stranger granted his wish, promising that at sunrise, Midas would have the Golden Touch.
