THE NIGHTINGALE AND THE ROSE UNIT -2 (SUMMERY AND TRANSLATION AND MCQS)

 UNIT - 2

SUMMERY

1. The Nightingale takes flight

The Nightingale spreads her brown wings and soars into the air.  She moves gracefully, like a shadow, across the grove and the garden.

2. First Rose-tree (white roses)

In the centre of the lawn, she finds a beautiful Rose-tree. She asks it for a red rose in exchange for her sweetest song. The tree refuses: its roses are white (like sea foam or snow). It directs her to another Rose-tree near the Student’s window.

3. Second Rose-tree (red roses, but no bloom this year) The Nightingale flies to the Rose-tree near the Student’s window. She again requests a red rose. The tree replies: its roses are red (like a dove’s feet or coral). But the tree has suffered: winter, frost, and storm have damaged it. It cannot produce any roses this year.

4. The Nightingale’s desperation

The Nightingale begs: she only needs one red rose.

She asks if there is any way to get it.

5. The terrible secret

The tree admits there is one way, but it is very painful and dreadful. The Nightingale insists she is not afraid and wants to know.

6. The price of the red rose

The tree explains:

The rose must be created out of music in the moonlight.

It must be stained with the Nightingale’s own heart’s blood.

She must sing all night with her breast against a thorn.

The thorn will pierce her heart.

Her life-blood will flow into the tree, giving it the power to produce the red rose.

7. The Nightingale’s choice

She realizes death is a high price, because life is precious.

Yet, she believes Love is greater than Life.

She compares her bird’s heart to a man’s heart and decides to sacrifice herself.

8. Her final action

She spreads her wings again, soars into the air, and returns to her tree, ready for sacrifice.
