📖 What is Past Indefinite Tense?

Past Indefinite Tense or Simple Past Tense is used to express an action, event or activity that was completed in the past.

👉 ଅତୀତ ସରଳ କିମ୍ବା Past Simple କାଳରେ କାମ, ଘଟଣା ବା କାର୍ଯ୍ୟଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଅତୀତରେ ସମାପ୍ତ ହୋଇଥାଏ ବୋଲି ଦର୍ଶାଯାଏ।

Subject + V2 + Object

1. Sita wrote a letter to Ram.
ସୀତା ରାମଙ୍କୁ ଚିଠି ଲେଖିଲା।
2. They played football.
ସେମାନେ ଫୁଟବଲ୍ ଖେଳିଲେ।
3. Ravi Shankar purchased a TV.
ରବିଶଙ୍କର ଏକ TV କିଣିଲା।
4. It rained yesterday.
ଗତକାଲି ବର୍ଷା ହେଲା।
5. He went to Jaipur yesterday.
ସେ ଗତକାଲି ଜୟପୁରକୁ ଗଲା।
6. Sakshi washed her clothes.
ସାକ୍ଷୀ ତାଙ୍କ ପୋଷାକ ଧୋଇଲା।
7. I wrote a book.
ମୁଁ ଗୋଟିଏ ପୁସ୍ତକ ଲେଖିଲି।
8. He came here yesterday.
ସେ ଗତକାଲି ଏଠାକୁ ଆସିଲା।
9. Rahim donated one hundred rupees.
ରହିମ୍ 100 ଟଙ୍କା ଦାନ କଲା।
10. I helped her.
ମୁଁ ତାକୁ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କଲି।

❌ Negative Sentences

Past Indefiniteର Negative ବାକ୍ୟରେ did not ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ।

Subject + did not + V1 + Object
He wrote.
➡ He did not write.
She went.
➡ She did not go.
They played.
➡ They did not play.
⚠️ Important Rule:
Negative sentenceରେ did not ଥିଲେ main verb ସବୁବେଳେ V1 ହେବ। V2 ବ୍ୟବହାର କରିବା ନାହିଁ।

ଯେତେବେଳେ ଗୋଟିଏ ବାକ୍ୟରେ ପ୍ରଶ୍ନ ଏବଂ ନାକାରାତ୍ମକତା ଦୁଇଟି ଥାଏ, ତାହାକୁ Interrogative-Negative Sentence କୁହାଯାଏ।

Didn't + Subject + V1 + Object?
He watched TV.
➡ Did he not watch TV?
➡ Didn't he watch TV?
He went to market.
➡ Did he not go to market?
➡ Didn't he go to market?
💡 ମନେ ରଖନ୍ତୁ: Did / Didn't ପରେ ସବୁବେଳେ V1 ବ୍ୟବହାର ହୁଏ।

🎯 Uses of Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense ବିଭିନ୍ନ ପରିସ୍ଥିତିରେ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ।

1)Completed Action in the Past ⏰

ଯେତେବେଳେ ଗୋଟିଏ କାମ ଅତୀତରେ ସମାପ୍ତ ହୋଇଥାଏ, ସେତେବେଳେ Simple Past ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।

An accident took place yesterday.
I wrote a letter the day before yesterday.
He came last night.
She telephoned me last night.

2)Completed Past Action ✔️

ସମୟ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ନଥିଲେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯଦି କାମଟି ଅତୀତରେ ସମାପ୍ତ ହୋଇଥାଏ, Simple Past ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।

He went to market.
I donated five thousand rupees.
She washed her clothes.
Ramesh bought a pen.

3)Past Habit 🔄

ଅତୀତର ଅଭ୍ୟାସ ବା habitual action ଦର୍ଶାଇବା ପାଇଁ Simple Past ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ।

He always carried this bag.
She never went to church.
She always asked for a cup of tea.
He never missed the train.
💡 Past habit ପାଇଁ used to ମଧ୍ୟ ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।
He used to walk in the morning.
(ସେ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ସକାଳେ ଚାଲିବାକୁ ଯାଉଥିଲା।)

4)Indirect Speech 🗣️

Reporting Verb Past Tenseରେ ଥିଲେ Reported Speechର Present Indefinite ସାଧାରଣତଃ Past Indefiniteକୁ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତିତ ହୁଏ।

He said, “I go to market.”
➡ He said that he went to market.
Ram said to Sita, “Laxman goes into the forest.”
➡ Ram told Sita that Laxman went into the forest.

5)Conditional Sentences 🤔

କେତେକ unreal or hypothetical conditional sentenceରେ if + Past Indefinite ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।

If I had a map, I would give it to her.
If he tried to blackmail me, I would inform you.

6)Sequence of Actions 🔢

ଅତୀତରେ ଏକାଧିକ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କ୍ରମାନୁସାରେ ଘଟିଥିଲେ Simple Past ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୁଏ।

He switched on the light before he opened the door.
The train started just before I reached the station.
He changed his dress before he went to bed.
She switched off the light before he locked the door.

7)Simultaneous Past Actions 🎬

ଅତୀତରେ ଗୋଟିଏ ଘଟଣା ସମୟରେ ଅନ୍ୟ ଏକ ଘଟଣା ଘଟିଥିଲେ Simple Past ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୋଇପାରେ।

When the queen entered the hall, the orchestra played the National Anthem.
When the P.M. entered the meeting room, all congratulated him.

8)Wish / If Only 🌈

Wish ବା If only ପରେ Past Indefinite ବ୍ୟବହାର କରି ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନର unreal situation ବୁଝାଯାଏ।

I wish I were a millionaire.
(ମୁଁ କୋଟିପତି ନୁହେଁ।)
I wish I knew her.
(ମୁଁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଜାଣେ ନାହିଁ।)
If only I knew her.

9)“It is Time” Structure ⏰

It is time / It is high time ପରେ Past Indefinite ବ୍ୟବହାର କରି ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନର ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ସମୟ ବୁଝାଯାଏ।

It is time we went home.
It is time you finished.
It is high time we left.
It is time you went home.
