NIGHTINGALE AND THE ROSE (SUMMERY AND MCQs) UNIT 1
NIGHTINGALE AND THE ROSE
BY
OSCAR WILDE
(SUMMERY)
UNIT 1
Ø A young Student is heartbroken
because the girl he loves has promised to dance with him only if he brings her
a red rose.
Ø Sadly, he has no red roses in his
garden, and this makes him feel miserable—even though he is wise and
knowledgeable in philosophy.
Ø The Nightingale, a bird who lives in
an oak tree, hears his sorrow. She realizes that he is a “true lover,”
suffering deeply because of love.
Ø The Student imagines how happy he
would be if he had a red rose—his beloved would dance with him, he would hold
her, and his dream of love would come true. But without the rose, he feels
doomed to loneliness.
Ø The Nightingale reflects on the
nature of love, recognizing that it is more precious than jewels or gold and
cannot be bought or sold.
Ø Meanwhile, other small creatures (a
Lizard and a Butterfly) overhear and laugh at the idea of weeping over a rose,
but the Nightingale alone understands the Student’s pain.
