SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

 

”THE verb must agree with its subject in number and person”

ଗୋଟିଏ  ବାକ୍ୟରେ   VERB ଏବଂ SUBJECT ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଏକ AGREEMENT ଥାଏ । ଯଦି singular subject ଥାଏ verb ମଧ୍ୟ  singular ହେବ ।

a)    I am playing.

b)   They are playing.

c)   He is playing.

d)   We are playing.

 

ବାକ୍ୟ (a) ଏବଂ (c) ରେ subject  singular ଅଟେ ତେଣୁ verb ‘am’  ‘is’ singular  ଅଟେ  ତଥା ବାକ୍ୟ ‘b’ ଏବଂ ‘d’ subject plural ଅଟେ ତେଣୁ verb ‘are’ Plural ଅଟେ ।

 

RULE 1

କେତେକ ବାକ୍ୟରେ singular subject ଥାଇ ମଧ୍ୟ plural verb ର ପ୍ରୟୋଗ କରାଯାଏ ।

(a)           ଯେତେବେଳେ ବାକ୍ୟରେ ‘କଲ୍ପନା’ କିମ୍ବା ଅସମ୍ଭବ ଭାବର ସର୍ତ୍ତ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶିତ ହୁଏ ।

·        I wish I were the Prime Minister.

·        I wish I were a bird.

·        Were he a king!

·        Were she an eagle, she would fly to me.

·        She ordered as if she were my mother.

·        If i were you, i would kill him.

ଏହି ସମସ୍ତ ବାକ୍ୟରେ କଳ୍ପନାର ଭାବଅଛି । ଅସମ୍ଭବ ସର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶିତ ହେଉଛି । ଏହି ପ୍ରକାରର ବାକ୍ୟରେ were ର ପ୍ରୟୋଗ singular subject ସହିତ କରାଯାଇଥାଏ ।

(b)           ଯେତେବେଳେ ବାକ୍ୟରେ verbs; bless, save, help, live, ର ପ୍ରୟୋଗ ଇଚ୍ଛା, ଅଭିଳାଷା; (desire, wish ) କିମ୍ବା ଆଶୀର୍ବାଦ ର ଭାବ ପ୍ରକଟ କରେ ସେତେବେଳେ singular subject ରେ bless, save, help, live, ର plural form ର ପ୍ରୟୋଗ କରାଯାଏ ।

( ଅର୍ଥାତ blasses, saves, helps, lives, ପରି ପ୍ରୟୋଗ କରାଯାଇ ନ ଥାଏ )

 

·        God save the queen.

·        God help you.

·        Long live the king.

·        God bless you with a baby.

(c)            ଆମେ ଜାଣୁ ବାକ୍ୟରେ need ଏବଂ dare ର ପ୍ରୟୋଗ Modals ପରି ହୁଏ,

Subject singular ଥିଲେମଧ୍ୟ dare ଏବଂ need ରହିବ ( dares କିମ୍ବା needs ହେବ ନାହି )

·        He need not go there.  ( needs ହେବ ନହିଁ )

·        She dare not oppose your proposal. ( dares ହେବନହିଁ )

·        Need he go there ?

·        One need not write anything to him.

·        Dare she oppose you?

·        He dare not speak like this.

ଉପରୋକ୍ତ ବାକ୍ୟରେ dare ଏବଂ need modal verbs ପରି ହୋଇଛି । ସାଧାରଣତଃ Negative ଏବଂ Interogative ବାକ୍ୟରେ dare ଏବଂ need modals ପରି ବ୍ୟବହାର ହୋଇଥାଏ ।
